Circ is an independent magazine that explores the foundations of creative culture. It is dedicated to the importance of Circulating, distributing, publishing, sharing, and fostering non-hierarchical conversations through the assembly of collected text and visual communication. For each issue, we invite contributors to submit their thoughts, essays, stories, or any text format that aligns with a theme determined by the Circ team. Each theme is presented as a question, which evolves in response to the previous contributions, creating a dialogue-like cycle. We believe this slower dynamic of public discourse is essential to preserve in an age dominated by rapid digital interactions. Circ magazine aims to reinvent the concept of a semi-tangible forum through printed materials while providing an inclusive space for creative self-expression.
We publish as we go. Our periodicity is not defined as all our team members are full-time occupied people working on Circ in their free time. Sometimes, we publish once yearly; sometimes, we publish an issue every four months. Defined periodicity is impossible due to the team's need to gather sufficient funds for production. All funds we obtain are sourced from sales and donations.
Paula Pokorná is an art director, creative technologist, occasional artist, and co-founder of the Circ Magazine. She works cross-disciplinarily between conceptual art, communication design and HCI research. Her research and concepts focus on sociocultural issues mediated by the internet culture.
Mae Smith is a graphic design alumna of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie—her work centres around printed matter, writing, and publishing. With a focus on linguistics and typography, she aims to explore diverse methods of communication and collaboration in her projects. Mae currently lives in Amsterdam.
Dorota Kolářová is a creative producer and concept designer with a background in visual communication. Her work blends creative direction, PR, and interdisciplinary initiatives, supporting projects with a context-driven approach. Dorota is currently based in Amsterdam.
Brina Jeffries is a painter, interaction designer, and creative manager working across digital media and the fine arts. Her practice explores the social and cultural dimensions of marginalized voices across communities. With a background in visual storytelling, she brings a critical, narrative-driven lens to her creative practices. She is currently based in London.
Whether it’s an essay, recipe, commentary, code snippet, or poem, you’re free to submit your work in whatever format feels right to you. The minimum word count is 150, but there’s no strict upper limit.
Deadline: July/17th/2025
